Musical Ignorance at its Worst

The following appeared in a local paper as part of a "gift" from a regional merchant on July 4th.

The tune is well known enough that few could get lost while singing it, but imagine if a musical literate from another land picked this up and actually tried reading the music for the purpose of singing it.

In fact, you don't have to imagine it. Here's a RealAudio file of a MIDI realization of it. I have taken the artistic liberty of interpreting the notes that don't know if they are a liney or a spacey as quarter tones, and have guessed at the notes that float somewhere below the staff. I'm particularly proud of the sections where the meter becomes confused. For proper enjoyment, be sipping some Night Train Express, or Thunderbird as the tones waft through the ether.
